Where does kratom come from? The tree and its home range

Mitragyna speciosa is a tropical tree in the Rubiaceae — the coffee family — native to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea. It grows up to 15 metres in hot, humid lowland forest, and it is farmed, not wild-harvested at commercial scale: growers manage stands of trees, pruning for leaf production rather than felling. Where the world’s kratom actually grows

The overwhelming majority of the global supply comes from Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan), with Sumatra, Riau and West Kalimantan regions prominent, and smaller volumes from Thailand — which legalized cultivation in 2018 — and Malaysia, where the paradox of a native tree under a 1952 ban persists. Harvest and drying: where character is created
