Kratom strain names follow a simple grammar — but almost nobody explains it. Color + region: a “Red Bali” is red-dried leaf associated with the Bali trade route; a “White Borneo” is fast-dried leaf from Borneo island stock. Understand that pattern and the entire shop shelf decodes itself — including which parts of a name are verifiable and which are pure marketing.
The naming system
Nearly every commercial kratom strain follows [vein color] + [regional name]:
- Color — red, green, white (and yellow/gold for fermented or blended): the drying method, explained in how vein colors are made.
- Region — the historic origin or trade hub of the leaf stock.
A handful of names add a third layer — grade or processing, like Maeng Da (“pimp grade”, selected high-alkaloid leaf) or Bentuangie (fermented).

What a name can and cannot tell you
Can: the intended drying method and the general origin of the stock. Cannot: the alkaloid content of the specific pouch in your hand. Two “Red Balis” from different vendors can test worlds apart; the same vendor’s batch can drift season to season. The name is a starting point — the batch certificate of analysis is the fact. Marketing names to treat with suspicion
- Trademark-sounding hybrids — “Red Dragon”, “White Elephant”, “Gold Bali Supreme” — usually relabeling, occasionally genuine selection, never verifiable from the name.
- “Ultra/Enhanced” — implies added extract, which should be stated in exact milligrams if present. See extracts vs plain leaf.
