Kratom Serving Size & Dosage Guide

Serving size is the single biggest source of confusion in the kratom category — and the single biggest source of risk. This guide explains why a “dose” cannot be prescribed over the internet, what actually determines how a serving is measured, how serving sizes differ between powder, capsules, tablets and shots, and the safety principles that apply to every format.

Read first: Pure Ohms Shop sells kratom products as botanical specimens for research, collection and aromatherapy only. They are not for human or animal consumption. This page is educational information about product measurement, not medical advice and not a dosing recommendation. If you choose to consume any botanical product, speak to a qualified healthcare professional first. See our full Health Disclaimer.

Why there is no universal kratom serving size

Search for a kratom serving size and you will find dozens of confident numbers. Almost all of them are unreliable, for three reasons.

  1. Alkaloid concentration varies between batches. Mitragynine content in Mitragyna speciosa depends on the plant’s age, origin, harvest season, drying method and leaf position. Two batches of the same strain from the same supplier can differ substantially.
  2. Body composition and metabolism vary between people. Body weight, liver enzyme activity, prior exposure and concurrent medication all change how a pharmacologically active compound behaves in an individual.
  3. Format determines absorption. A liquid shot, a compressed tablet, a capsule and loose powder deliver the same compound at very different rates.

This is why no responsible retailer gives personalised dosing instructions, and why you should be sceptical of any vendor that does.

How serving sizes are measured, by format

FormatHow it is measuredWhat the label tells you
Loose powderBy weight on a digital scale accurate to 0.01 gTotal weight in grams; assay gives % mitragynine
CapsulesBy capsule countMilligrams of leaf material per capsule
TabletsBy tablet countMilligrams of mitragynine per tablet
Liquid shotsBy bottle — single, sealed serveMilligrams of mitragynine per 50 ml bottle

The critical distinction is leaf weight versus alkaloid weight. A 500 mg capsule is 500 mg of leaf. A 200 mg tablet is 200 mg of mitragynine. Because leaf typically assays at 1–2% mitragynine, those two products differ by roughly an order of magnitude in alkaloid content — despite the numbers looking similar.

Why a scale matters more than a spoon

If you work with loose powder, a $20 digital scale accurate to 0.01 g is the most important purchase you will make. A level measuring teaspoon of kratom powder can weigh anywhere between roughly 2 g and 3.5 g depending on how finely it is milled, how humid the air is, and how firmly it is packed. That is a variance of up to 75% between one scoop and the next.

Weighing removes that variable. It also lets you record what you actually used, which is the only way to understand your own experience with any botanical product.

Consistency beats quantity. Keeping every serving identical is more useful than chasing a bigger number. Variation, not volume, is what makes experiences unpredictable.

Beginner principles that apply to every format

  • Start lower than you think you need to. There is no prize for a large first serving. The most common mistake made by new buyers is overestimating.
  • Do not redose to “top up” quickly. Stacking servings before you understand the onset profile of a product is the second most common mistake.
  • Change one variable at a time. New product, new batch or new format — not all three at once.
  • Never combine with alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, sleep aids or any other central nervous system depressant. This combination is associated with the most serious adverse events in the published literature.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery.
  • Keep a written record. Product, batch number, format and time. If you ever experience an adverse effect, that record is the first thing a clinician will ask for.
  • Avoid daily use. Published case reports associate chronic daily use of kratom alkaloids with tolerance, dependence and withdrawal on cessation.
  • Keep everything locked away from children and pets.

Tolerance and dependence

Kratom alkaloids act on receptors that are known to develop tolerance with repeated exposure. In practical terms that means the same serving produces a smaller effect over time, which creates pressure to increase it. That cycle is well documented and is the principal risk of habitual use.

Published case reports describe withdrawal symptoms on abrupt cessation after prolonged daily use, including irritability, insomnia, muscle aches, runny nose, sweating, gastrointestinal upset and low mood. If you experience any of these or any other adverse effect, stop and seek medical advice.

What to do if you take too much

  1. Stop taking any more immediately.
  2. Do not leave the person alone. Stay with them and monitor breathing and consciousness.
  3. Call for help early rather than hoping it passes.
  4. In the United States call Poison Control on 1-800-222-1222 (24 hours) or 911 for an emergency. In Canada contact your provincial poison centre or 911.
  5. Tell the clinician exactly what was taken, how much, and when — and bring the product packaging and batch number with you.
  6. Do not induce vomiting unless a medical professional tells you to.

Serious adverse events in this category are most often associated with very high-potency products and with co-use of other central nervous system depressants. That is why we describe our high-mitragynine range as intended for experienced adults only.

Storage and shelf life

  • Keep sealed, cool (below about 25°C / 77°F) and dry.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight — UV degrades alkaloids.
  • Keep away from strong odours; botanical powder absorbs them.
  • Refrigerate only if the packaging states it is suitable; condensation from repeated temperature changes is worse than steady room temperature.
  • Label storage is typically 24 months from manufacture. Rotate older stock first.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a teaspoon of kratom powder?

Approximately 2–3.5 g for a level teaspoon, varying with milling fineness, moisture and packing. Do not rely on spoons — use a scale accurate to 0.01 g.

Does body weight change the serving size?

Body composition is one of several factors, but it is far from the only one. Metabolism, prior exposure, medication and batch potency all matter. This is one reason no universal figure exists.

Why does the same product affect me differently on different days?

Food in the stomach, hydration, sleep, timing, batch variation and prior exposure all alter the experience. Take notes if you want to understand your own pattern.

What is the difference between a 300 mg shot and a 200 mg tablet?

Both are labelled in milligrams of mitragynine, but the shot is a sealed liquid single serve and the tablet is a compressed unit. The shot is the fastest-delivering format we manufacture; the tablet is the most precisely repeatable.
