Why GMP Certification Matters for Kratom

When a kratom vendor says their products are GMP certified, the claim has a precise meaning — and it is worth understanding, because it is the difference between a manufactured product and a repackaged agricultural commodity. GMP is not a potency badge and not a lab result. It is a set of manufacturing disciplines that make the lab result trustworthy in the first place.

What GMP actually is

Good Manufacturing Practice is the quality-system framework used across food, drug and dietary-supplement production. In the kratom industry, the reference standard is the American Kratom Association’s GMP program, modeled on the FDA’s cGMP regulations for dietary supplements (21 CFR Part 111). Certification means a manufacturer has committed to:

• Documented procedures — every process step written, followed and auditable.
• Batch records — each production run traceable from raw material to finished pouch.
• Hygiene and facility controls — sanitation schedules, pest control, contamination prevention.
• Employee training — documented, ongoing.
• Supplier qualification and recall capability — when something goes wrong, it can be found and pulled.

Why kratom specifically needs GMP

Kratom is imported agricultural product: harvested abroad, dried outdoors in many cases, milled, shipped and repackaged. What GMP is not

1. Not a potency guarantee. GMP proves the process; potency is proven by the certificate of analysis. You need both — which is why we publish COAs for every batch.

3. Not transferable to resellers. A reseller of GMP-made product is not itself GMP certified — ask who manufactures, and whether the answer is a facility or a forwarding address.

GMP vs “repackaging” — the industry’s real divide

Most kratom “brands” never manufacture anything: they buy bulk powder, blend and re-bag it in uncontrolled conditions. GMP exists because that model is where contamination happens. How to verify a GMP claim

• Ask who is certified — the facility by name — and at what level (manufacturing vs packaging).
• Expect audit documentation; AKA GMP qualified vendors are listed publicly.
• Treat GMP + published COAs as one combined standard — either alone is incomplete.
