It was first isolated from Mitragyna speciosa leaves in the early 20th century, and it is the plant’s most abundant alkaloid by a wide margin. It is the reason the tree’s Latin name became the compound’s everyday shorthand.

Dried commercial leaf typically contains roughly 1–2% total alkaloids by weight, and mitragynine normally accounts for about half to two-thirds of that fraction.
